White-Bellied Musk Deer

The white-bellied deer is also called Himalayan musk deer, and it is a musk deer species occurring in the Himalayas of China. Due to the White-bellied musk deer’s lack of antlers and facial glands, the zoologist believes that the musk deer are more primitive than true deer and possess only a single pair of teats, a gall bladder, a caudal gland, a pair of tusk-like teeth.
The figure of white-bellied musk deer is usually stocky, and its hind legs are longer than its front legs. The body length of adult white-bellied musk deer is approximately 80 to 100 centimeters long. It can grow up to 50 to 70 centimeters and weigh between several kilograms to over ten but under twenty kilograms. It mainly lives in forested and alpine scrub, and its feet are adapted to climbing in rough terrain.
The musk is much like the small sheep. Because its hind legs are longer than its forelegs, it is good at running and naturally suited to climbing but awkward at walking. Besides, it has well-developed dewclaws and broad toes, which can provide more stability on steep slopes. Under the belly, there is a bag where musk is stored. Like true deer, the food of white-bellied deer is mainly leaves, flowers, and grasses, with some mosses and lichens.
