Tibet’s Tamaks-A Special Group of People

To most of us, Tibet recalls a heaven of mystery and charm. Tibet’s Tamaks Gyirong has been living in Gyirong valley for a century, and this village has been called a garden hidden behind Mount Qomolangma. This village is surrounded by snow-capped mountain, and seclude from the world. The average of village with a high elevation is more than 4,000 meters. Some relevant historical records show that the Tamak group descends from Nepal’s Gurkha at the when Gurkha invaded Tibet in 1791,but the failed. A group of survivors could not return to their motherland, so they became today’s Tamak. They have no identity until they has been identified as Tibetan Chinese since 2003. Before this year, they live a vagrant life that we had no houses, no land, no animals, and no schools. Tamak means cavalryman or blacksmith in Tibetan language. For the reason that they made a living by working as blacksmiths and servants for Tibetans, and the family will provide them much food, and doing some heavy farm work such as cultivation, harvesting, herding, and so on. They were not allowed to have diet together and live in their house and they were discriminated against.
Today, they have been recognized as Tibetan by the local government and their customs are almost the same as other Tibetans. They have chance for normal school education and live a better life with the investment of the government.
