Tibetan Meadow Festivals are one of the traditional Tibetan festivals and it is also called Tibetan Calendar Year. To Tibetan people, it is just like the Spring Festival of the Hans. The festival will last about one week and it is celebrated on the early first month of Tibetan calendar. Before the festival, every family will clean the house thoroughly. According to the customs and habits of Tibetan people, people will pour out sewage and rubbish toward the west when the sunset. In this way, they believe that the all stuff harmful to the human health will disappear from their home. Then, all family members will begin to prepare festival food for their festival such as seedcakes and cheesecakes, blood sausage, mutton sausage, and other festival food for their coming festival.
On the 1st day of the festival, that is the Tibetan New Year, the hostess will get up at dawn and go to the riverbank to carry water. Then back home, they will put some fresh milk in the water and the whole family will wash up themselves with the water. After that, all of them will burn joss sticks, and pray for the abundance of the harvest and the health livestock in the next year. At night, the whole family will have a big dinner together. Before the dinner, everyone will take some “Zamba” flour, which means they are “Zamba” eater and they will bear the ancestors in mind and never forget their gratitude.
There are many activities for the festival. People can watch the sorcerer’s dance and take part in it. Sorcerer’s dance is one traditional Tibetan religious dance. The dancers would wear a mask and dress cassock, and they will dance to the accompaniment of some religious instrument, such as cymbals, gongs, drums and trumpet shells.
