A short flight into Tibet offers a panorama of the snowy Himalayan ranges and snow covered Tibetan plateau. If you take the train to Tibet it emerges onto the high plateau by crossing the mighty Tanggula pass (5076m) getting you to Lhasa with beautiful sceneries along the route. On your arrival at the Gonggar Airport or Lhasa Train Station you will be greeted by our Tibetan guide and driver and transferred to your hotel in Lhasa city. From the airport to Lhasa is about 60km and it takes less than an hour along the recently built highway. From the train station it is only 25km and it takes about half an hour. Check into the hotel and take it easy for the rest of the day to acclimatize and alleviate any jet lag.
Stay overnight in Lhasa.

DAY 02. LHASA ESCORTED TOUR
Attractions: Jokhang Temple and bustling Barkhor Street and Sera Monastery.

Today is your first day on the high plateau and some of you may have a little headache which is very common for travelers at high altitudes so drinking enough water and only mild activity on the first few days is recommended.

In the morning our guide will meet you at the hotel and take an easy visit to Jokhang Temple in the center of the Old Lhasa city. Jokhang Temple is one of the most sacred temples in Tibet and it has always been busy with earnest local pilgrims since the early days. After that you have time to walk around Barkhor Street which is one of the most devotional pilgrimage circuits as well as the crowded central market of Lhasa. During the old days it was the most famous local market in Tibet but now it has changed to become a tourist gift shopping center.

The amazing day will end with a visit to the Sera Monastery. It was built in the 15th century by the Jamchen Choji Sakya Yeshi who was a disciple of Je Tsongkhapa the founder of the Gelug School of Tibetan Buddhism. The major monastic colleges in Sera are home to several hundred monks from different parts of Tibet. The famous Buddhist philosophical debates among the monks happen in the afternoon every day except Sunday. Continue to acclimatize and alleviate jet lag for the rest of the day.
Stay overnight in Lhasa.

DAY 03. LHASA ESCORTED TOUR.
Attractions: Potala Palace and Drepung Monastery.

Today we will visit the famous Potala Palace the cardinal landmark of Tibet and a masterpiece of Tibetan architecture. It was first built by the 33rd King of Tibet Songtsen Gampo in the 7th century and later rebuilt by the 5th Dalai Lama in the 17th century. Since then it was home to the Dalai Lama and his government. Walking up the long steps is quite challenging but it is worthwhile to leave your foot steps in the spiritual palace of the God of Compassion. The palace was listed in the UNESCO World Heritage lists in 1994.

In the afternoon we will visit the Drepung Monastery once the world's largest monastery which once housed more than 10000 monks. It was the official residence of the Dalai Lama prior to the completion of the Potala Palace and has seen severe damage taken over the centuries. However you still have lots of things to see and walking through the huge numbers of narrow and twisted lanes through the monks’ apartments is thrilling. Continue to acclimatize and alleviate jet lag for the rest of the day.
Stay overnight in Lhasa.

Important information for touring in Lhasa.

·      Best Season to Travel

The capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region and the ancient capital of the Tibetan Empire Lhasa is one of the most beautiful cities in China. Renowned for its beautiful scenery Lhasa enjoys more sunshine hours per year than anywhere else on the plateau hence its nickname of the “City of Sunshine”.

Tourist seasons in Tibet depend on the activity you are intending to take part in but with the capital you can visit the city and the surrounding areas all year round. The best times to travel are normally from April to June and September to October but thanks to the relatively low amount of monsoon rain in the summer months July and August are also great times to visit. Just bring a raincoat with you for the odd daytime shower. Summer is also the main tourist season and the city can get crowded with thousands of people crammed into the attractions.

Spring and autumn are dry periods with comfortable temperatures while summer has rainy evenings and higher temperatures with a lot higher humidity. Even the winter is suitable for travel in Lhasa as the temperatures do not get too low averaging just below freezing at night in the colder months. As the low season for tourism in Lhasa it can be beneficial for those that want to avoid the crowds and do not mind a little chilly weather.

·      Best part of the Tour

A four-day tour of Lhasa brings you to some of the major attractions of the city and allow you to see the typical city Tibetan culture at its best. For many people the best part of the tour of Lhasa is the amazing view of the Potala Palace the iconic symbol of Lhasa that stands on the Red Hill overlooking the city. Built in the 17th century by the fifth Dalai Lama the palace was once the seat of monastic governance of Tibet and is now the winter palace of the Dalai Lama and a historic museum.

·      Unique Tour Attractions

Lhasa has many unique attractions but by far the most unique is the stunning Jokhang Temple a 7th century temple that houses one of the oldest known statues of Sakyamuni Buddha at the age of twelve known as the Jowo Rinpoche. The temple was completed in around 652 and was named as Trulnang which was later changed to Jokhang after the Jowo Rinpoche was enshrined there in around 710 AD by the Tibetan Princess Jincheng. Said to have been blessed by Buddha himself more than 2500 years ago the Jowo Rinpoche came to be owned by the king of Magadha who gifted it to the first Tang Emperor before it was given to the Tibetan king Songtsen Gampo as part of the dowry for his Chinese wife Princess Wencheng.

·      Altitude Changes of Tour

Unlike most tours of Tibet the four-day tour of Lhasa does not have much of a change in altitude with the exception of a few hundred meters. The whole tour is based in the Tibetan capital and only reaches altitudes of up to almost 3900 meters. On average the main city of Lhasa lies at an elevation of around 3656 meters above sea level though some points are a little higher. The Potala Palace is the highest point in the city center at around 3711 meters with the Jokhang Temple in the midst of the Old City being at around 3660 meters. To the north of the city Sera Monastery lies at an altitude of around 3690 meters while to the west the Drepung Monastery sits on Gambo Utse Mountain at 3849 meters above sea level.

·      Top Hotels

Lhasa has a huge number of hotels for tourists to stay in which range from the simplest Tibetan guesthouses to the lushest of five-star luxury hotels. Where to stay on your tour does depend solely on you and we can arrange your accommodation to your choice.

The major luxury hotels in Lhasa include the St. Regis Lhasa Resort the Four Points by Sheraton the Manasarovar Grand Hotel the Intercontinental Lhasa Paradise and the Brahmaputra Grand Hotel. If these are not your idea of a perfect place to stay in Lhasa then the four and three star hotels range from the Shangri La Hotel and the Lhasa Yak hotel to the Lhasa Shangbala Hotel and the Tashi Choten Hotel.

Lhasa also has many Tibetan-styled hotels and guesthouses including the Yabshi Phunkhang Heritage Hotel the House of Shambhala the Lhasa Kyichu Hotel and many others. Our expert advisors can give you more information on the hotels available for your tour.

·      Tour Popularity

The awesome 4-day tour of Lhasa and its unique attractions may not be the most popular tour on the plateau but it is an amazing insight into the daily lives of the people of the world’s highest capital city. And with an average of around 7% of all travelers choosing a short break in Lhasa this exciting trip to the Roof of the World is without a doubt one of the most intimate of all tours in Tibet.
