Tibetan wild donkey is also called kiang, and It is the largest of the wide asses native to the Tibet Plateau.
The Tibetan wild ass is distributed in China, India, Nepal and Pakistan. But about 95% of the population is found on the Tibetan plateau, between the Himalayas in the south and the Kunlun Mountains in the north. The kiang is the largest of all wild asses growing to be about 2.3 meters, weighing up to 400 kg. Their coat is a dark brown with hints of chestnut on the top and with white belly, chest and legs. They will turn to darker brown in winter and turn to a sleek reddish brown in late summer. Kiang prefers open and rolling terrain because they can detect their predators then they can flee in advance in such areas. The predator they face is the wolf, and when the wolf come to attack kiang, the Tibetan wild asses will form a defensive circle and to kick the wolf. They prefer to live in the riverine pastures, because there are much abundance of sedges and grasses. During summer Kiangs, they inhabit alpine meadows, but during winter, they will descend to valley bottoms.
Due to the excessive hunting and human encroachment on Tibetan plateau, it is already caused their population largely decline in past decades. So it is time to protect them.
Viewed against the blue sky, white clouds and the shimmering white of the snow-mountains and glaciers, you will see a group of Tibetan wild donkey running on the vast desert. Comes and experience this magical animal world with our Explore Tibet Team.
