Serthar (Larung Gar) Buddhist Institute was restricted for foreigners
Serthar Buddhist Institute is also known as Larung Gar, it is one of the largest Buddhist community around the world, there are more than 20,000 people living in the valley, who are mostly monks, nuns and then Buddhist practitioners.
Serthar Buddhist Institute was founded in 1980 with starting population of 30 Buddhist practitioners, and later in 1987, the 10th Panchan Lama had visited and wrote application to the Serthar regional government for support.
Serthar Buddist instate is located about 605km via Barkham (Ma Er Kang in Chinese) which is from Chengdu to Barkham 346km and from Bakham to Serthar is 259km. The Serther Buddhist institute is only 20km from Serthar County.
In the recent years, Serthar became a popular travel or pilgrimage destination among the Chinese Buddhist and tourists, every year there are increasing number of Chinese Buddhist practitioners stay in at the monastery and practice Tibetan Buddhist.
These days there is a restriction for foreigners going to Serthar monastery (Larung Gar), so if you planning to Serthar may not allow in the area these days.
