Rongbuk monastery is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery from Nyingma sect in Basum Town in Tibet which was established with the name Dongnga Choling in 1902 by Nyingmapa Lama Tsedru Ngawang Tenzin in an area of meditation huts and caves that had been in use by communities of nuns since the 18th century.. Rongbuk is claimed to be the highest monastery in the world. It has traditionally coordinated the activities of around a dozen smaller religious institudtions, all of which are now ruined. Renovation work has been ongoing since 1983 and some of the interior murals are superb. Upstairs is a large status of Guru Rinpoche. Unusually, the 38 monks and nuns currently share the monastery, though new accommodation is being built for the nun next to the monastery guesthouse. Rongbuk monastery lies near the base of the north side of Mount Everest at 4,980 metres (16,340 ft) above sea level, at the end of the Dzakar Chu valley. Rongbuk Monastery was an important pilgrimage site, accessed in a few days’ travel across the Himalaya. Mount Everest is near Rongbuk monastery and many tourist hike from there to Everest. From Rongbuk monastery you can enjoy the world’s highest mountain in the world.
