Sheep is one of the necessities for Tibetan New Year and it plays an important traditional role in the Tibetan religions.Sheep head is called “Longo” in Tibetan, and it is a multi-colored sheep head sculpture made of butter since sheep symbolizes auspiciousness.
The sheep’s head is responsible for the tradition of the Bon religion on the altar at Losar. According to the legend,on the first morning of Losar, a Bon god Panden Lhamo will come to the altar of all Tibetan homes and receive the offering of a sheep head, and then gives blessings to the family for the upcoming year. If he find no sheep head, he will leave without blessings. So in the Tibetan family, sheep head is always placed in the middle of all the tributes in front of the niche for a statue of the Buddha.
Nowadays,Tibetans become more creative and clever in making sheep head, even though the real sheep heads are still used , but most of the Tibetan family has converted to the new sheep head cake tradition. Most Tibetan people make sheep heads out of barley cake. It is interesting to see a Losar altar with elaborately decorated barley cake sheep head or some sheep head decorated with butter sculpture as sacrificial offering at Tibetan New Year.
