Water Thanksgiving Festival
Festivals have always been an important part in Tibetan ethnic culture. People in Tibet find reasons to celebrate something almost every month. Water Thanksgiving Festival is a festival mainly for celebrating in order to pray for rain and child.
It is popular among the Tibetans live in Mianning County of Sichuan Province. It takes place on March 6 of the lunar calendar of Tibetan. On that day, a lama will bring frogs, snakes and toads models with him,and they are made of sticky rice. Each family will send one or two deputies to the raceway together. The lama will give an oral instruction, and place the animal figures in the water. Then they begin to return home, at this time, they will put up bamboo hat and wear a raincoat as if it will rain. This indicates that they praying for rain worked,and sooner or latter it will begin to rain.
After then, they will toward to a round pagod44a to worship a round pagoda. The round pagoda contains a knife and a boiler, which symbolize procreation. Some married women without babies for a long time will vow to the pagoda god for a baby. And those woman who gives birth to a baby from her vow before, has to repeat the worship for her vow at the pagoda. At the same time, every family will prepare good wine and dainty dishes to celebrate the festival.
