Queen of Tibetan dancing “Geba”-Tsekyi
Dance is an indispensable entertainment in the life of Tibetans. No matter on any festivals or events, Tibetan women will wear the long-sleeved dress and dance in a circle. “Geba” Dance is a dance staged by masses of people or a single person, they or she will beat a drum while spinning around, and this scene will become one of the most spectacular folk dance in areas inhabited by Tibetans. Tsekyi was born in Chamdo, east of Tibet in 1969.When she was thirteen years old, she joined the Chamdo Art Troupe and immediately was attracted by “Geba” dance.Tsekyi loves Gema,and she believed Gema can show the passion and friendliness of Tibetans very well. As a special dancing category in the east of Tibet,Gema is the precious cultural heritage passed down by the older generations.From that time,she develop a faith and passion to inherit and develop the culture of Geba. When she was 19 years old, she decided to learn the dancing skills of “Geba” from elderly folk artists in all towns of Chamdo prefecture. At first, the old artists unwilling to teach her because they are too conservative to afraid she will grab their jobs.Then,Tsekyi stress the the importance of inheriting and developing the culture to the old artists,letting them understand the importance of losing national identity.Through many efforts,those artists agreed to teach her the dance steps.She also summarize the different traditional dancing skills from 13 towns and created a new kind of “Geba”.
She has wined more than 20 prizes ,but she thought the audiences’ support and appraisal means much more than any prizes. She will keep on dancing and teaching Geba to the rest of her life.
