Sino-Nepal Border Kyirong Will Reopen to Travelers From June 2016.
The Sino-Nepal friendship bridge and Zhangmu border has been the key way between two countries, thousands of travelers enter and exit Tibet through this border, it not only save their expensive flight cost but also provides an amazing overland journey by driving parallel to the Great Himalayans, so the overland driving journey from Tibet to Nepal through the friendship highway became one of the most popular tour in Tibet.
Zhangmu border is a small border town on the Tibet side and on the opposite side of the Mustang river is the Kodari which is Nepalese village. Zhangmu was full of hotels and restaurants to cater both the international and domestic tourists, the winding narrow roads are always crowded with money exchange people carrying their handy bags and tourist, but from last year April 25th, the all street in the Zhangmu was became totally silence the friendship bridge border was closed after Kathmandu was hit by the deadly earthquake on April 25th, 2015.
Since the border to Nepal is the key route for many tourist as well as business people who are trading between Nepal and Tibet, but due to alpine geographical location, the border couldn’t reopen for whole year, then the both the Chinese and Nepal government has invested to build roads to Kyirong and find it as the alternative border by concerning safety, distances and many other prospective.
According to CCTV news in China, the Kyirong border will reopen for third nationality tourists from June 1st, so that will substitute the Zhangmu border in the future, roads are almost finished with paved and big enough. Kyirong is only around 2,000 meter from the sea level, from Kyirong border it is only 160 km to Kathmandu which takes around 6 hours’ drive. Opening of the Kyirong border will recover the Tibet Overland driving journey to Nepal and Tibet tour companies are preparing different overland Tibet tours crossing through Kyirong border.
Kyirong border wan first opened in 1961 mainly for trading between Tibetans and Nepalese, then later when Zhangmu border opened most of trades carried through Zhangmu and Kyirong became less popular.
